Man Crashes Ferrari To Save Hedgehog

We’ve heard of some pretty silly excuses from exotic car owners who have just turned their high dollar investments into insurance write-offs, but we’d have to say Joerg Daescher has the strangest explanation for crashing his 1995 Ferrari Testarossa we’ve ever heard.

According to the 53 year old man, it wasn’t a heavy foot that caused him to crash his F512M last week in Lower Saxony, Germany — it was a hedgehog. Yes, a hedgehog. You know, like “Sonic.”

The UK’s Daily Mail reports that while trying to avoid the prickly mammal on wet roads, Daescher spun out of control in his Ferrari and hit a barrier.

Luckily neither the man or the hedgehog (not pictured) were injured in the crash, but the same could not be said for the Ferrari.

The car sustained an estimated £30,000 (about $47,500) worth of damage. We can only wonder what effect this hefty repair bill will have on Daescher’s actions next time he sees a small animal in the road.

Outdoor Channel, in partnership with the National Conservation Training Center, provides this live EagleCam to stream the activities of the eagle nest located 110 feet up, in a tree on the grounds of the US FWS National Conservation Training Center. The nest has been active since 2006, fledging several juvenile bald eagles. The eagles return to the nest for the winter season around mid-January, with eggs being laid in early February. The eagles are wild birds, and anything can happen in the wild. NCTC does not interfere or intervene, and allows nature to take its course. You’ll see life and you might see death, but this is real nature in action!

The video above provides a slow motion look at things ranging from setting off large fireworks indoors to microwaving a bottle of red wine.

The Zanj Rebellion

At the height of the Abbasid Empire, thousands of East Africans, known as Zanj, were transported as slaves to work in the salt marshes near the town of Basra, in what is now southern Iraq. Led by Ali ibn Muhammad, the exploited Zanj—free and enslaved alike—rebelled in 869 CE. They successfully raided towns and villages and even expanded north and established a capital. It took 15 years for the Abbasids to suppress the revolt, in part because they were also struggling with what other group? More…

World’s Fair Starts in Seattle, Washington (This day in 1962)

Hosted at the dawn of the Space Age, the 1962 World’s Fair featured a glittering array of futuristic technology. Nearly 10 million people came to see the new cars and gadgets or ride to the top of the new Space Needle. While its technology was advanced, the fair anticipated none of the social changes soon to come—the society of the future looked like that of 1950s, but with gyrocopters. Why did US President John F. Kennedy lie, claiming to be too sick to attend the closing ceremony? More…
