So, I believe that eating white rice comes under the “if it’s so bad all of Asia should be populated with diabetics.”

Which makes a normal person think stories like this are full of crap.

Note how they mention the frequency with which Asians eat it but make no attempt to clarify how much lower risk to westerners is based on our much less frequent consumption. They’d just as soon you believe ANY white rice will have you stabbing needles in yourself the rest of your lives.

Eating white rice could increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, Harvard researchers claimed.

Each large serving of white rice was linked to an 11 percent increased risk, scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health concluded from an analysis of four studies carried out in China, Japan, Australia and the U.S.

The study authors wrote in the British Medical Journal, “We found that higher white rice consumption was associated with a significantly elevated risk of Type 2 diabetes. This association seems to be stronger for Asians than for Western populations.”

The studies followed 350,000 people over 22 years — during which time more than 13,000 people developed Type 2 diabetes.

The researchers noted that compared with brown rice, white rice has a lower content of many nutrients including fiber, magnesium and vitamins, some of which — especially fiber and magnesium — are thought to protect against diabetes.

White rice is the most common type of rice eaten worldwide. The researchers claimed that people in Asian countries eat it an average of three to four times a day, compared with an average of one to two servings a week for people in Western countries.

Creeping Sharia

IBRAHIM Siddiq-Conlon, a Muslim convert who has argued for the imposition of sharia law in Australia, has been charged with making a hoax terrorist threat after he allegedly threatened to “wear some TNT” to Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Mr Siddiq-Conlon, who is behind the controversial organisation Sharia4Australia, has also been charged with child pornography offences after police allegedly found a number of illegal images on his home computer.

The western Sydney man yesterday declined to say if he was guilty of the pornography charges, which he admitted would attract “some minor punishment” under sharia law if he were found guilty.

“It might be a lashing, it might be jail, it might be a fine,” Mr Siddiq-Conlon said.

Salim Farrar, an expert in sharia law at Sydney University, said pornography was forbidden under Islamic law, although most jurisdictions made no distinction between adult and child material.

Dr Farrar said pornography was a discretionary, rather than hudud or traditional offence, such as adultery or theft, meaning punishments could vary.

“It’s unlikely to be a fine because fines are not part of the sharia system,” Dr Farrar said. “But it could be corporal punishment. Whatever punishment he would get, it would be less than the hudud offences.”

Australian Federal Police charged the confessed hater of democracy last month.

He was charged with using a carriage service to issue a hoax terrorist threat, possessing child-abuse material, and using a carriage service to access child pornography.

If you think cutting up books can only be a destructive process, then you have never encountered the art of Brian Dettmer.

Dettmer creates his masterpieces by bending the book into an position that fans out the pages to some extent, then he cuts away parts of each page one at a time to reveal the hidden artwork within. It’s kind of like an X-ray that makes you a voyeur looking inside the book without actually opening it. Some of his more recent work combines several books glued together, often multiple volumes of a set to provide a sense of continuity across the piece.

Colossal Squid’s Colossal Eyes Help It Spot Sperm Whales

Scientists think they know why giant and colossal squid have eyes the size of basketballs—to help them spot the sperm whales that prey upon them. Researchers were at first puzzled because the huge eyes, which can measure 11 in (27 cm) across, seem to offer little advantage in the dark depths of the ocean and because no other known species has eyes even close to this size. However, it turns out that the eyes are better able to spot the glow of bioluminescent life forms at a distance. When a sperm whale swims, it disturbs these organisms, creating a glowing trail that could warn squid of the predator’s approach. More …
