NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — People in the Tri-State Area are living longer than ever, and if scientists have their way, life expectancies will continue to rise. Technologies today could allow the next generation to live up to 150, but how far should scientists go to allow people to live this long?
Baby Maxwell Jones’ life is just getting started, but if he’s lucky, the hours-old infant could live well into the next century.
“A hundred years, seems a stretch but it’s obviously possible,” his mother told CBS 2′s Kristine Johnson.
Geriatrician Dr. Joyce Fogel says medical advances have already made a huge difference.
“There was a time when people didn’t live to older age because they died from the flu. We’re doing much better. In 1900, when somebody was born, they were expected to live to the age of 50,” she said.
Scientists are making huge advances in the lab, growing new organs from adult human stem cells, creating body parts with 3D printers, and using gene therapy to successfully treat diseases like blindness and leukemia.
And that’s not all. Doctors have already doubled the lifespan of a worm.
More than just possible as some aging experts believe scientific breakthroughs will mean babies born today will live more than 100 years.

The Difference Between Grandmothers & Grandfathers…
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Grandmothers and
Grandfathers? Well, here it is: There was this loving grandfather who
always made a special effort to spend time with his son’s family on
weekends. Every Saturday morning he would take his 7-year-old
granddaughter out for a drive in his ’56 Chevy for some quality time –
just him and his granddaughter.
One particular Saturday, however, he had a bad cold and really didn’t
feel like being up at all. He knew his granddaughter always looked
forward to their drives and would be disappointed. Luckily, his wife
came to the rescue and said that she would take their granddaughter for
the drive.
When they returned, the little girl anxiously ran upstairs to see her
grandfather who was still in bed. “Well, did you enjoy your ride with
grandma?” he asked. “Oh, yes, Paw Paw, it was really wonderful.  We
didn’t see one single asshole, piece of crap, horse’s ass, blind bastard,
dipshit, Muslim goat humper or son of a bitch anywhere we went!”

In the rush to come up with pun headlines to describe the phenom that is Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, unfortunately it was probably just a matter of time before someone slipped up and said something racist.
But many likely never thought that someone would be ESPN.
Covering the Knicks loss to the Hornets and the snapping of the rising star’s 7-game winning streak, the venerable sports network titled their article “Chink In The Armor.”
The offensive slur-pun was up on ESPN.com for 35 minutes between 2:30 and 3:05 AM.
As Mike Nizza of The Daily points out, the overnight shift lacks the sort of oversight that might have halted such an insensitive headline well prior to publishing, but that’s hardly an excuse.
ESPN has since released a statement apologizing for their choice of words, and vowing to conduct a “complete review of our cross-platform editorial procedures.”

The rifle shot boomed through the darkening forest just as Damien Mander arrived at his campfire after a long day training game ranger recruits in western Zimbabwe’s Nakavango game reserve. His thoughts flew to Basta, a pregnant black rhinoceros, and her two-year-old calf. That afternoon one of his rangers had discovered human footprints following the pair’s tracks as Basta sought cover in deep bush to deliver the newest member of her threatened species.
Damien, a hard-muscled former Australian Special Forces sniper with an imposing menagerie of tattoos, including “Seek & Destroy” in gothic lettering across his chest, swiveled his head, trying to place the direction of the shot. “There, near the eastern boundary,” he pointed into the blackness. “Sounded like a .223,” he said, identifying the position and caliber, a habit left over from 12 tours in Iraq. He and his rangers grabbed shotguns, radios, and medical kits and piled into two Land Cruisers. They roared into the night, hoping to cut off the shooter. The rangers rolled down their windows and listened for a second shot, which would likely signal Basta’s calf was taken as well.

There has been a debate among scientists since the 1960s about how the first plant species arose between 1 and 1.5 billion years ago. The most widely accepted idea is that the plant kingdom had a single ancestor that formed when a plastid joined in a symbiotic union with a cyanobacterium, and the new research lends weight to this hypothesis.
Plastids are a class of organelles that includes chloroplasts. Chloroplasts produce the green color of plants and green algae because they contain the pigment chlorophyll, which is able to convert energy from light into energy useful to the cell, in a process known as photosynthesis.
Plastids are found in all green plants, the glaucophytes, and in red algae, and are known as primary plastids. They were originally cyanobacteria, which became incorporated into the cell. The glaucophytes are a group of microscopic blue-green algae found in freshwater, and only 13 species are known, none of which is common. They have been little studied, even though some scientists have suggested they may be the most similar to the original algae that first incorporated a cyanobacterium.
