Britain’s longest-serving blacksmith is still forging iron in his workshop – at the age of 84. Hardy Fred Harriss, 84, first picked up a hammer and tong aged ten in 1938 and is still working every day 74 years later. He has worked back-breaking 12 hour days fixing steam engines and aircraft, as well as making railings and ornamental iron pieces. And the hardy blacksmith – who refuses to wear gloves for the blistering work – claims he will NEVER retire from the job.

Fecal Transplants Cure Clostridium difficile

Clostridium difficile is one of hundreds of species of bacteria normally living in the human intestinal tract, but when the other species are wiped out, it can overwhelm the gut, causing severe diarrhea and even death. C. difficile is difficult to cure, as the very thing that often creates the problem—antibiotics—is also the standard treatment. Fecal transplants may hold the key to restoring bacterial balance. Researchers hope to eliminate the “ick factor,” as well as the risk of transmitting infections, by identifying which fecal bacteria are needed to clear up C. difficile and then growing them in a lab instead of using actual fecal matter.
